Cretan Cities and Villages: Towns

 

 

 

 

The four regions of Crete [ Chania / Hania / Xania, Rethymno, Heraklion / Iraklio, Lassithi] each have a large city within their borders. In Chania, Rethymnon, and Heraklion prefecture, the major cities share the same name as their region respectively. Lassithi's largest city is Agios Nikolaos. Other beautiful towns and villages are dispersed across Crete. Some mountain towns have very ancient customs and practices still in place today [See our section on Culture ] while some coastal villages are very modern and touristy. The Cities of Crete

The City of Chania [View towns in this region]
The second largest city on the island of Crete, Chania has a population of about 60 thousand people and is the capital of the region of Chania. The furthest West of all the large cities, Chania is a popular tourist destination. With a few good beaches on the outskirts of town, most tourists visit Chania for the architecture and the culture it provides as well as its convenience. Chania is located only 15 minutes (by taxi) from the CHQ airport. In the center of town, is a large open-air market and many well appropriated shops. Another popular area for tourists and locals alike is the Old Harbor of Chania where many restaurants line the water. [Read more]

The City of Rethymno [View towns in this region]
Rethymno is the capital of the region of Rethymno and is located on the Northern part of the region. Easily accessable from either of its neighboring regions, Rethymno is also a popular tourist destination. The home of carnival, Rethymno has a slight reputation for its party atmosphere during the month of February or March [depending on the Greek Orthodox calender]. [Read more]

The City of Heraklion [ also known as Iraklion or Iraklio ] is the largest city on Crete and is the capital of the region by the same name. Heraklion is the most modern of the towns and cities on Crete and is also the busiest due to its population size. Heraklion is located on the Northern coast of the region and is easily accessible by roads that run both East and West from the city and North and South. [Read more]

The City of Agios Nikolaos [View towns in this region]
Agios Nikolaos is the capital city of the region of Lassithi, the Eastern-most prefecture on Crete. Agios Nikolaos is, perhaps, the most well-developed tourist town on the island and is full of resort hotels and accomodations for tourists. [Read more]
